How Beaucatcher Mountain got its name...

In the mid 1800's Asheville was home to the Lee School for Boys, founded by Colonel Stephen Lee. At the same time there was there was a school for girls – The Asheville Female College – which was on the other side of town. Though both campuses were strictly gender exclusive, boys being boys and girls being girls, somehow they were going to get together.

It appears that one of Asheville's prominent citizens, Mr. J. W. Patton, had built a summer arbor on the mountain and it may be that it became a gathering place for young couples but it's highly likely that many of them simply wandered hand in hand along the numerous trails while friendship ripened into love. And that's the legend of how Beaucatcher Mountain got its name.

THE STORY OF HELEN’S BRIDGE

West of Beaucatcher Heights, on Beaucatcher Road as it approaches the top of Beaucatcher Mountain, is a beautiful old stone bridge. This solidly constructed old bridge has seen a lot of events since it was built near the turn of the twentieth century to provide access to the historic Zealandia Estate. One of the strangest tales associated with the bridge is the story of Helen. Although her last name has been lost to the decades since she walked along the mountain, her story and her presence are still a part of Beaucatcher Mountain. Helen was a beautiful young woman who would walk with her boy friend along the roads and trails of the mountain. Her love for the young man was strong and they were betrothed to be wed. Before the happy event occurred, the young man broke Helen’s heart by proclaiming his love for another. It is said that he confessed this while they were walking on Beaucatcher Mountain. Upon hearing of his deceit, Helen ran to the bridge. Distraught with the news and overwhelmed by a broken heart, Helen leapt off the bridge to her death.

It is said that on moon lit nights, visitors to the Bridge can see Helen’s eerie form walking along the road near the bridge that now bears her name, looking for someone to love her in the after life. Will she select you?
